  17. <p>   "Say it loud," sang James Brown, "I'm black and I'm proud."
  18. The year was 1968, an exhilarating time of Black Pride, Black
  19. Power and slogans like "Black Is Beautiful." "Black" became
  20. more than a racial characterization; it was an assertion of
  21. social and political self-definition. The terms colored and
  22. Negro, in common use as late as 1967, were cast off as labels
  23. of second-class citizenship.

  25. <p>    Now, if people follow the lead of the Rev. Jesse Jackson,
  26. "black" may become equally obsolete. Jackson declared last week
  27. that citizens of his race should henceforth be known as African
  28. Americans. "There are Armenian Americans and Jewish Americans
  29. and Arab Americans and Italian Americans," he explained. "Every
  30. ethnic group in this country has reference to some land base,
  31. some historical cultural base. African Americans have hit that
  32. level of cultural maturity."
  33. </p>
  34. <p>    The term Afro American came into vogue during the 1970s, but
  35. African American is just beginning to catch on. Former tennis
  36. champion Arthur Ashe has written a new three-volume book, A Hard
  37. Road to Glory, that is subtitled A History of the
  38. African-American Athlete. While some people may find the phrase
  39. too much of a mouthful, it does have what Jackson calls
  40. "cultural integrity," conveying the dual heritage of blacks
  41. born and bred in this country.

  43. <p>    In The Souls of Black Folk (1903), W.E.B. DuBois wrote of
  44. the "twoness" that blacks in the U.S. constantly confront. If
  45. "African American" wins wide usage, it may be a small step
  46. toward reconciling some of the conflicts and contradictions of
  47. black life in this nation.
